Protecting Solar Cables from Rodent Damage: Effective Solutions

Protecting Solar Cables from Rodent Damage: Effective Solutions

OCTOBER 18ST,2024

The cable system in a photovoltaic (PV) power station acts as the "artery" of the entire system, responsible for the core task of power transmission. However, since PV power stations are typically installed outdoors, they are susceptible to damage from small rodents (such as mice and ants). Ordinary cables can be easily chewed, leading to short circuits and leakage issues, which not only disrupt the normal operation of the power station but also increase maintenance costs and complexity. To address this issue, rodent-resistant solar cables have emerged as an effective means to extend the lifespan of power stations and reduce maintenance expenses.

How to Prevent Damage to Solar Cables from Rodents?

  1. Use Rodent-Resistant Solar Cables:
The most convenient and effective solution is to use rodent-resistant solar cables, which feature a special outer layer made of materials that deter chewing. These cables significantly reduce the risk of damage compared to ordinary cables. Unlike other protective measures, rodent-resistant cables do not require additional installation or equipment; they can directly replace standard cables, saving time and effort. This choice not only minimizes damage and failures caused by rodents but also greatly extends the lifespan of the entire system. For operators of solar power stations, selecting these cables reduces maintenance frequency and saves considerable costs, making it a highly rewarding investment.

  2. Install Cable Protective Conduits:
During installation, threading cables through metal or PVC protective conduits is an effective protective measure. Protective conduits isolate cables from direct contact with small animals, significantly enhancing durability. However, compared to using rodent-resistant cables, protective conduits require additional installation and can be somewhat cumbersome to maintain.

  3. Install Rodent Repellers:
Sound or electromagnetic repellers are another option that emits specific frequencies to drive away rodents. These devices are environmentally friendly and do not affect the cable system but have higher installation costs and require a power source, making them suitable for use in conjunction with rodent-resistant cables.

  4. Regular Inspection and Maintenance:
Implementing a monitoring system to identify and address cable damage is essential. Regular checks for signs of rodent activity on solar cables, and timely replacement of damaged cables or enhancement of protective measures can help extend cable lifespan. However, rodent-resistant cables inherently reduce the risk of damage from the outset, minimizing maintenance needs.

  5. Deploy Natural Repellent Materials:
Sprinkling natural repellent materials, such as peppermint oil or chili powder, around the cables can deter rodents and is cost-effective. However, these materials need to be replenished regularly and are better suited as temporary or supplementary measures.

  6. Optimize Cable Installation Location:
Avoiding direct contact of cables with the ground or hanging them in areas easily accessible to rodents can lower the risk of damage. Elevating or securing cables during installation can further reduce potential destruction. Nonetheless, rodent-resistant cables remain the most convenient option in terms of simplicity and effectiveness.

In summary, using rodent-resistant solar cables is the most straightforward and effective approach, significantly reducing maintenance costs, extending the lifespan of power station equipment, and ensuring the long-term stable operation of photovoltaic plants.
