European Electricity Prices Surge in Early July, Italy Sets New Weekly Record

JULY 9ST,2025

In the first week of July 2025, electricity prices across Europe climbed significantly, with Italy recording the highest weekly average at €122.82/MWh. According to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, the weekly average in France was €75.50/MWh, while Belgium reported €94.03/MWh.

Throughout the week, day-ahead prices in most major European markets—excluding the Nordics—frequently surpassed €100/MWh, and on Tuesday, July 1, many markets exceeded €110/MWh.

AleaSoft reported that weekly prices increased across the main European power markets compared to the previous week, though the rise was modest in some regions. The MIBEL markets of Portugal and Spain, along with Italy's IPEX, saw increases of 4.4%, 4.5%, and 4.7% respectively.

In contrast, Germany and Belgium experienced the steepest rises, both jumping by 43%. Prices in France and the UK rose by 23%, while the Netherlands posted a 37% increase. Most analyzed markets exceeded a weekly average of €75/MWh, with the exception of the Nord Pool market in the Nordics, which settled at just €20.04/MWh.

The heatwave that swept across Europe was a key factor driving demand. Electricity consumption rose week-over-week in all major markets, ranging from 0.8% in Germany to 6.6% in Spain. Portugal, Belgium, and Italy also saw noticeable increases, between 3.8% and 6.1%.

On July 2, mainland Spain hit its highest daily electricity demand since 2025 began, reaching 806 GWh. Italy followed with its yearly peak on July 4, registering 1137 GWh in demand.

In the solar sector, results were mixed. Solar PV generation increased in Germany (15%), Portugal (13%), and France (1.8%), while Italy and Spain experienced decreases of 8.7% and 7.3%, respectively.

Despite weekly fluctuations, several markets set new single-day solar records. On July 1, Germany and Italy produced 438 GWh and 145 GWh respectively, while France hit 165 GWh on July 4, all marking the highest daily PV outputs for July.

Looking ahead, AleaSoft forecasts an increase in solar output in Spain during the week of July 7, while Germany and Italy may see declines in PV generation.
